1959 Candidate Richard Nixon visits Milford High School

An old faded Cincinnati Times Star newspaper photo tells a story. Richard Nixon walked quietly around the playground as he prepared his speech. Extreme Secret Service protection of candidates did not come until years later. This was the famous 1959 Nixon speech where he promised he was not a crook and vowed to have the most open and honest presidency in history. I remember school was called off for half a day. That was enough for a lot of us to become Republicans. Nobody was ever able to explain why Nixon spent so much time speaking at schools—the voting age was 21. He lost the election to JFK by just a few votes. Oddly, no candidate who campaigned at MHS won the election they were involved in until Bill Clinton visited the school and invited several co-eds to become interns in Washington. Nixon toured the elementary grades and met these kids who were State Marble Champs in 1959. I think the one in the middle was Bobby Berryhill. He had two younger brothers and also had a sister in the class of '62 I think. All of the Berryhill kids were nicknamed "Blue". I can't remember the other two kids in the photo. Does anyone?
