| INTRODUCTION |
Cedar Falls in Ohio...a black and white photo in honor of Ansel Adams |
| All books about the
wilderness
are in dedication to Ansel Adams, Henry David Thoreau and John Muir.
That's a given. This book is thusly dedicated to them. That we even
still have some wilderness is largely due to their efforts. This
book is further dedicated to all those other elders of the tribe from
whom
a whole world has taken inspiration. We are indebted to such men
as Harvey Manning, Colin Fletcher, Edwin Way Teale and Edward Abbey
among
numerous others. Thank you.
Harvey Manning awakens us to the joys of backpacking and nature, One Step At A Time. We thought we knew how to walk until Colin Fletcher showed us how to do it with joy and purpose. We came North With The Spring through the gentle teaching of Edwin Way Teale. The writing and legacy of Edward Abbey will forever inspire us to do the right thing for the planet. What we do in the wilderness will be our true tribute to our mentors. Walk softly in the shadow of their greatness. I love the wild places and those who have defended them but on a personal level I also dedicate this effort to the true love of my life, my wife. Traveling to the far reaches of the continent with her has made each stop Eden. The natural wonders are but a bonus. The purpose of this book is to share some views of places I think were worth the effort to see and to share some tips I have found to be invaluable while hiking and backpacking. It is not intended to be a complete guide to anything except those experiences I have found rewarding in the wilderness. |
