The UWF Women's Soccer Team

2010 FINAL NOTES

Members of both teams pose after wining the GSC Tournament.

Coach Joe Bartlinski has a career record of 168-23-11.  This year's team was typical of his teams.  They played with finesse and skill.  They also played hard.  They didn't shy away from the physical game that modern championship collegiate soccer has become.  They spent time gliding through the air and they spent time diving on the ground.  A team with many new faces, they were 2-2 on September 12th.  They roared back to finish 17-2-2!  They were down 2-0 in their final game only to salvage a tie with a furious comeback.

Character goes hand in hand with winning at UWF.  This year's team will lose two high character winners who also just happen to be outstanding athletes.  You build programs around people like Noha Saleh and Shakira Duncan.  This year's team had a lot of great players to replace from last year's team.  Next year's team will have a roster of people with all the skill, pride, character and desire needed to be champions again.  It's their team now and the program couldn't be in better hands.  We can't wait.

NCAA TOURNAMENT  Tampa 2, UWF 2
Tampa Advances On A Penalty Shootout After Two Scoreless Overtimes
IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR!
17-2-2

THINGS I LEARNED:
These were two excellent teams today and they played hard!

The best team doesn't always win.  If they did, we could save the expense
and travel of a tournament and simply choose the winner by computer.

There are about 300 NCAA Division II schools.  Two hundred and fifty did not make the
tournament this year.  Of the 48 in the tournament, all but one will lose their last game of the season.

My respect for the UWF Soccer teams and their coaches increased again this
year.  This has got to stop or I'll be recommending them for sainthood soon.

Noha Saleh and Shakira Duncan were good players and leaders.  They will be missed.
They leave behind a great team they helped build. That team will excel again next year.

Soccer is a great game.

I have a ton of photos to process from this game.  I will try to upload them as soon as possible.  In addition,
I will have a CD of about 3,500 photos from this year.  I'll have these for the team also as soon as possible.

HERE ARE PHOTOS OF EVERYONE WHO PLAYED IN
THE GAME..there is a link below for more than 300 more photos.

Five against one is a fair fight...if the one is Noha Saleh!

CLASS AND CHARACTER!

The entire team rises to applaud the team they've beaten in a hard fought and very physical match!

The game went to two overtimes and a penalty kick shootout to determine a champion.

It was said by someone that UNA had the advantage because they have the best goal keeper in the conference.  She's awfully good and made the All-Tournament Team.  I'll leave the comparisons to the vast majority of people who are smarter than I.  All I know is when the dust settled, Ali Ryan had stopped great shots and forced others wide.  She's awfully good too.  Foreshadowing: Here, Ali Ryan dives to stop the first UNA shot.  (Please ignore the fence and net in the shot.  I was trying to get a different angle without being a distraction.)

Alexis Pugh drives the ball into the net to end the contest in great style!

Ashley Slocki races (as best she can on her recovering knee) to join her teammates in celebrating the championship season she helped to achieve!

Celebration

Class and character, Part Two:  Argos players make the effort to console a distraught opponent. UNA has nothing to be
ashamed ofthe NCAA recognizes this and they have been selected to join UWF in the National Championship Tournament.

President Judy Bense in a familiar role!

The GSC Tournament saw UWF defeat Harding 5-0 before the epic battle with UNA.

Class And Character Part Three:  The members of the team left me speechless after the game.  They presented me with a beautiful card and special gift in appreciation for taking these photos and maintaining this web site.  It's hard to make me speechless or for that matter, to bring a tear to my eye.  Their thoughtfulness did both.  I am the one who is  appreciative.  I got to photograph and enjoy championship sport at this lofty level.  NCAA Division II is every bit the real deal in athletic competition.  It merits more recognition. This is the age of the anti-hero and self-centered star athlete.  At UWF it is the age of class and character.  I tried to compliment Coach Bartlinski on the character of his players.  He simply said that's who they are.  As usual, he disavowed any credit and said if I met their parents I'd understand why they have such character. I tried to reiterate my contention that like attracts like.  He changed the subject back to his players.  I tried to express this to President Bense as I exited the park after the games.  It was obvious I wasn't telling her anything she wasn't already well aware of.  As great as these folks are as athletes and coaches, it is obvious they are even better as human beings.  The Argos won themselves a championship on Sunday.  Their various communities, states and nations are the real winners.  Thank you.

UWF SENIOR DAY
Thanks for the memories—from your fans, your UWF family and the Pensacola Community.

Shakira Duncan looks back at fans and supporters one last time as she and Noha Saleh head back to join
their teammates for the start of their last regular season home game.  The good news is UWF is only losing
two seniors.  The bad news is they are losing Shakira Duncan and Noha Saleh.

Duncan!  Because of the location of the ball she has already headed (below the right elbow

Some Recently Discovered Photos From The 10-5 Night Game Vs Mobile

Annalis Cummings played all out!

Alex Pickrell jumps in front of an opponent to take a pass.

Like many of her teammates, Pickrell's biggest obstacle is getting playing time.

L to R, Kaitlyn Kutemeyer, Monica Malavassi, Alex Pickrell, Tori Fish and Jordan Stone defend against a throw-in.

Tina Murry is the kind of player who makes everyone better.  Despite a knee injury and everything else she does, she takes the corner kicks.

Shakira Duncan seems to be tarketed by defenders.  It doesn't seem to faze her!

Monica Malavassi is always a threat to score.

Kaitlyn Kutemeyer is listed as a freshman...she doesn't play like it.

Jordan Stone is relied on for leadership.  She takes the penalty kicks for the Argos.

Alexis Pugh is a talented freshman fromTennessee!

Jodi-Annn Robinson has been outstanding!

Cori McCullough is another of a super class of freshmen.  She is from Jacksonville.

Cori McCullough, Kaitlyn Kutemeyer and Jodi-Ann Robinson

Courtney Mincy is still another of this great freshman class.  She is from Pensacola!

Argos don't shy away from contact even though their game is based on finesse!

Again

Alexis Garrand is from Orlando.  Here she appears hidden by the ball
she just passed.  She is one more member of that great freshman class.

Alexis Garrand passes to Tina Murry.

Annalis Cummings is a talented junior from Trinidad!

Alexis Garrand and Annalis Cummings

Sarah Fagler outplays an opponent.  This hardworking sophomore is from Gainesville.

Goalkeeper Ali Ryan is a skilled junior from Australia.  I haven't done justice to the great Argos'
goalkeepers because the majority of the action in a UWF game is usually at the offensive end.

Goalkeeper Lauren Byrd, like her fellow keepers, doesn't get the photo recognition she deserves.  In this
game, the Argos outshot their opponents 27-3.  That tends to keep the photographers at the other end of the field.

Marissa Love, another one of the super freshman, is from Tallahassee.

Tori Fish is tough on offense as well as defense.

Ann Ilin Osland seems to show up in the middle of everything good happening on the field.  She is a freshman from Norway.

Tina Murry is another key player on both ends of the field.  She is a junior from Jamaica.

Jodi-Ann Robinson is equally capable of going through or around defenders.

Rachel Cutts is a key defender.  It's a lonely position with a lot of pressure.  Other teams have
good scoring threats too and a defender has to make split second decisions.  She does it well.

You wonder if goalkeepers have nightmares about Shakira Duncan.

Soccer players are tough.  Here Marissa Love knocks an opponent out with a short right to the solar plexus.  Ok, I
lied. It's an optical illusion.  The two players were contending for a ball that is just visible behind the left knee of
the CBU player.  Both teams played hard but clean.  Soccer at this level is very physical  (but not THAT
physical—if you look closely you can see  fingers extended from the alleged fist of the Argo player).

For those who have never seen a college level soccer game, you'll find UWF to have two exciting teams.  I haven't had the opportunity to photograph the Men's team this year but they have had an equally successful season.  Both teams play an up-tempo game based on skill, speed and energy.

Photos of all games are available on a free CD.  They are all full size and can be seen as full screen photos or full screen slideshows.  At last count we had over 1500 shots of the first 7 home games and 1 road game.

No. 7 again...

Kaitlyn Kutemeyer has been head and shoulders above the opposition...literally!

Ann Ilin Osland has been another hard working and valuable player!

Jordan Stone, Sarah Fagler and Courtney Mincy

As you can see, the action was great (as always) but the technical quality of the shots leaves a lot to be desired.  It was a night game. Game Four
Florida Southern 3, UWF 2   OT

Jodi-Ann Robinson displays a serious vertical leap!  What are the odds I got her image at the absolute height of her jump?  She's probably on the way up or the way down which means her total leap was even higher—this isn't a still from a video.

The Argos are not satisfied with a 2-2 record.  A lot of schools would be 0-4 with this schedule.  To them, 2-2 would be solid.  OK, so what does UWF need to do?  My entire soccer career could have been played in a phone booth but I'm not going to let that stop me from offering advice.  Go out and play.  Trust the coach...and each other.  The coach may or may not make some adjustments.  You are 28 excellent athletes.  The game will come to you. Step out and meet it.  Just play.  One day it's going to dawn on you that: "Hey,  we're winning."

GAME THREE
 ROLLINS 3, UWF 1

It was a very physical game.  I haven't seen many at this level that weren't.  These are strong, fast athletes.  I guess I put the monkey on their back with my gushing accolades.  Guess what—they're still great athletes with a great coach.  We'll know just how great a team they are by the end of the season.  (I didn't really think they'd go undefeated. This is NCAA Division II.  It's the real deal in athletic competition and the Argos play a demanding schedule.)

GAME TWO  UWF 3, Barry University 2

"She soars through the air with the greatest of ease..."
Well, it's not the lady on the flying trapeze.  It's Shakira Duncan.

Monica Malavassi is a relentless and skilled attacker.

Game One Highlights & Comments

WE'RE NUMBER TWO (Or Better)
This year's team is a pre season #2 pick in the NCAA and the pre season pick to win the talent rich Gulf South Conference.  Looking like a Florida  and International all star team, the Argos are talented and young.  Someone lamented they have only 2 seniors.  "Only" is the wrong word when those two seniors are Shakira Duncan and Noha Saleh.  Want even more leadership?  There are 5 experienced and highly skilled juniors.

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE
Coach Joe Bartlinski is a legend everywhere except in his own mind.  You can't get him to talk about himself.  OK, I'll do it.  I don't work for the university.  Hopefully, I can "tell it like it is" in a less irritating fashion than Howard Cosell. The coach is 151-21-9 in his career.  He's won everywhere he's coached and is 61-3-1 in the tough Gulf South Conference.  Overall, he's close to a winning percentage of .900.  To put that in perspective, if the NY Yankees did that, they would win over 145 games EVERY year.  (Their ONE year best was 114 wins in 1998).  See: GoArgos.com   for details about all UWF Athletics.

CHARACTER COUNTS
Like I said, the coach is reluctant to talk about himself so allow me.  I have observed the team for several years.  They won me over as a soccer fan.  That alone, should merit an award.  I've kept my eyes and ears open to the observable and to what is said.   In real life, character attracts character.  You win consistently with character.  Anything else is an aberration.  Give me two evenly matched teams battling in the last minute of overtime and I'll take the team and coach with character every single time.  You can spot that team.  They're exhausted but eager.  The evidence of the extra time they spend on conditioning shows up in overtime.  Their uniforms bear the mark of contact with the ground.  Coach Bartlinski recruits people of character. These dedicated and highly skilled student athletes will probably never work under someone with as much intensity and purpose as their coach.  They'll also never have a better friend.  We all win.

Game One:  UWF 2, Nova Southeastern 1

The winning goal!

This was a night game and where UWF is constantly upgrading its facilities, they haven't upgraded my skills or equipment.  Hopefully, we'll have better quality photos for future games.  In any event, UWF is not responsible for my comments or photographs.
