UWF MEN'S SOCCER
A WINNING TRADITION
FINAL NOTES 2010

Members of both UWF soccer teams pose after winning the GSC Tournament.

Coach Bill Elliott has a record
of 190-82-26. His UWF team plays a tough schedule. He has
won the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament the last five
years in a row! As good programs do, his Argos finished the
season strong by outscoring their opponents 16-2 in their last 6
games. They have appeared in the NCAA Tournament 5 times.
The Argos play hard. It's
a physical game at championship collegiate levels. There is
contact. The Argos play with skill but they don't shy away from
the physical aspects of the game. They also win while playing a
clean game. This is a tribute to their individual character and
it reflects on the character of the coach. These young men will
be successful in life. They are winners who happen to excel as
athletes. The Argos lose 6 talented seniors this year. They
are listed below in the Senior Day section. They leave behind an
impressive record. They also leave behind some players who are
eager to continue the winning tradition. Knowing the returning
players, and knowing the kind of high character athletes Coach Elliott
recruits, we wait eagerly for next season.

UWF 2-0 VS CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
UNIVERSITY
CHAMPIONS!

FIVE YEARS IN A ROW!!!!!
President Bense joins in
celebrating an incredible accomplishment. When you talk about
winning 5 conference championships in a row you'll be talking about
names like UCLA and John Wooden...and now, the University of West
Florida and Bill Elliott! The Gulf South is a strong conference
in
many sports including soccer. This year's team has a deep roster
and obvious skills. The deciding factor was character. They
played with what can only be described as disciplined fearlessness.

NOTHING COMES EASY AT THIS LEVEL

Note the ball in the center of the photo. This is Daniel Martini
scoring on a penalty kick.

This game was hotly
contested. Lambuth plays hard. Soccer at this lofty level
is a physical game and a finesse game. It attracts the best
national and international players and coaches. WHEN I GET TIME, I WILL BE POSTING A

10-23-10 VS NOVA SOUTHEASTERN
UNIVERSITY
UWF 1, NSU 0

It was a very, uh, "physical game."

Matthew Aldred was constantly "followed" by Nova's #15.

Sorry about the poor focus but I wanted you to see Nova's "defense."

Aldred kept his cool...red cards can sabotage your team's chances.

Apparently Nova had no other hope of stopping Aldred.

So they shoved...

grabbed...

wrestled...

and tackled Aldred.

"So how do you get a card?

Here comes the ground!
The ref finally gave a card...to Aldred. I think he felt the UWF
player knocked #15 to the turf. I saw the play (obviously) and I
think Aldred
was merely thinking the player was exhausted from pushing, shoving and
grabbing all night. He merely helped him to the ground to rest!

The rough play came back to affect the outcome. UWF kept up the
pressure and finally a
Nova player fouled within the box. Daniel Martini nailed the
penalty kick for the 1-0 victory.

It was a humid night...note the perspiration flying off the player's
head!

A 3-2 VICTORY IN OVERTIME
SPORT JUST DOESN'T GET MORE EXCITING AND DRAMATIC THAN THIS:

We'll start with the ending. UWF was one minute and 43 seconds
into overtime when Nick Salafrio scored the game winner.

NOW THAT I'VE SPOILED THE ENDING, WE CAN GO BACK TO THE
BEGINNING:

Apparently, goalkeepers get to warm up by facing a torrent of
uncontested shots
fired point blank from some of the best offensive players in the NCAA!

The best player among the survivors becomes the starting
goalkeeper. 00 Ramon Sealy played 91 minutes and 42 seconds.

It's a team game.
THE FOLLOWING NINETEEN PLAYERS
CONTRIBUTED TO THIS EXCITING VICTORY:

Bruno Ferreira #10 and Marquel Waldron, #22.

Waldron drives the ball.
Matthew Aldred

#16, Jack Salafrio

Salafrio leaves a defender grasping thin air.

Frank Cope slips by a defender. Note #17 Matthew Aldred in the
background.
Cope eyes what we don't
see—Aldred has gotten into position to score.

The pass catches defenders by surprise.

We see Aldred's drive and a surprised goalkeeper! Goal Argos.

Keeper Ramon Sealy displays great skill and an impressive vertical
leap! Defenders, Nick
Salafrio #20, Marquel Waldron #22, Nikola Kljaic #2 and
Matt Tanner #8 assist.

Marquel Waldron steps up (and up further).

#18 Lucas Williams, "Never touched him ref, he just falls down a lot
when he pushes
me." Jason Ream #13, logged 28 minutes of strong play and Alex Dumond
#6 was a
key player off the bench with 58 minutes!. Lucas Williams played
all 92 minutes!

Will Henderson cuts off an opponent.

Andre Verardi with one of his 2 hard shots on goal.

Ramon Sealy goes airborne again! Alex Dumond #6, Clifford Johnson
#24, Trey Kramer #14 assist.

#18 Lucas williams and Matt turner #8 and Matthew Aldred, #17 close in
on an opponent.

#5 Curtis Brashear deflects the ball.

Jake Pratt #25 closes in on an opponent.

#14 Trey Kramer was one of 4 players who played the entire game!

#24 Clifford Johnson was a factor at both ends of the field. #8
Matt Tanner played
the entire game. Curtis Brashear, #5, came off the bench to log
over 60 minutes!

Things are looking up for the Argos!

Bill
Elliott has coached the UWF men
for 15 years. His record is 177-77-24 (.680). I like to put
figures
like that into perspective. A winning percentage of .680
translates to
a baseball team winning 110 games a year, EVERY year. It's never
been
done—no manager has averaged even close to 100 victories let alone
110.
He's
won 7 GSC titles and was the NCAA runner-up in 2006. To do
him justice, go to GoArgos.com. You'll find an incredible story
of
success as a player and coach. I've never met the coach.
I've heard
nothing but descriptions of a man of unquestioned character. He proves
my oft said conviction that character wins. He
formerly coached the women's team to a record of 98-34-6.
