The Odyssey And Legacy Of Thomas And Marie Stockland

On February 8th, 1884 Thomas Martin Stockland married Mary Dahl (Marie Heyerdahl) in a service performed by St. Croix Wisconsin Justice Of The Peace, J.H. Makinison. Witnesses were Gilbert and Christie Hilson.

The groom was 30 years old if you believe Dunn county death records for his birth (Reported by Mary as: July 3, 1854). The U.S.Census recorded various years for his birth, 1847, '56, '57. He had immigrated to the United States in 1871. His parents were Marcus and Mary Stockland of Norway. The 1880 Federal Census listed Thomas as living as a boarder with the John Nelson Family in Wilson, St. Croix County Wisconsin...the neighboring county to Dunn county. His occupation was listed as "Working on the wood train." He died of a heart attack on April 28, 1931.

The blushing bride was 23 and also an immigrant from Norway. Her parents were Gul and Osie Dahl of Norway. Gullick Dahl was 58 in 1880 and living with his son and daughter-in-law, Guston and Mary, in Turtle Lake (Barron County), Wisconsin.  She was alive to complete her husband's death certificate in Colfax on April 28th, 1931. She is believed to have had a Cousin named Lu Heyerdahl living in Chippewa Falls. It is also believed she had a cousin in Minneapolis.  Mary Heyerdahl Stockland died on April 12, 1938 In Lutheran Hospital in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.   She died of cancer after a long illness.  The Colfax Messenger described her in an obituary as, "One of the most highly respected residents of the village."

Thomas worked for the railroads and would eventually become a section foreman. Mary listed her occupation as housewife. Together they had seven children and also raised a granddaughter. The children were: Myrtle,  Oscar (1884), Mangus (b. 1886 d. 1931), Arthur (1889), William (1890), Tora (1893) and Nellie (b. 1894 d. 1923).
