THE GREAT MILFORD BLIMP CRASH AND FIRE OF 1951

Long time Milford observers will be taken back down memory lane by this photo. Of course it is a shot of the infamous zeppelin crash of 1951. Fortunately, school had been cancelled all that week due to a Trench Foot epidemic that swept through the Little Miami Valley that year. It is believed that the MHS basketball team brought the malady to Milford by using the showers at the Mariemont High School following the Eagles 73-29 Eastern Hills League drubbing of the Warriors. The Milford Health commissioner ordered that all future athletic contests in Mariemont either avoid the showers or practice "Safe showering" by remaining shod during the experience.

Getting back to the zeppelin, it was a twelve seat Von Richterhoff aircraft manufactured by the old Milford Blimp Works on Guinea Pike. If you look closely you can see the "ribs" of the blimp body in the flames. This disaster marked the last attempt by anyone to use gasoline fumes to fill a blimp. Classes were held outdoors, weather permitting, until the school was rebuilt. The Eastern Hills League would eventually disband largely over the Trench Foot issue.

It was during this fire and the subsequent blaze which destroyed many surrounding buildings that the Milford Fire Militia earned the nickname "The Foundation Savers." The rival Milford Volunteer Fire Fighters Association was soon selected as the town's official fire department.
